Changing Seasons Provides a Time for Reflection

Harvest time is upon us

Every season has a beginning, a middle, and an end.  I look forward to each season and all that each has to offer.  Spring offers a new beginning, new life, new growth.  Summer shows the “fruits of our labour”.  It is a time to slow down and enjoy our Canadian summer.  Fall offers the opportunity to harvest what have we grown, and reflect on what we have accomplished. Finally, in winter, we rest.  We consider what might we want to grow again in the future, and prepare for the cycle to start again.

Foods help fuel our memories. Foods are a part of our major events, holidays.  Foods bring family and friends together in good times and bad.  A special turkey dinner with dinner rolls that only grandma knows how to make, with her priceless recipe of a little of this and a lot of that.  A comforting bowl of soup when we are sick.  A chewy brownie with mom's secret recipe.
In each season, we look forward to special foods as they are a tie to our past and a part of our own person histories.  As a dietitian, I am fortunate enough to work with food and nutrition, in both my professional and personal life.  I love to cook, to browse recipe books and magazines, to grocery shop, to come home and create meals that will nourish my family’s bellies and souls.

Over the past year, I have had many new experiences that will forever shape my life.  In September 2012, I started as a HealthCastle Director of the Calgary Chapter.  Myself, and Doug Cook, Director of the Toronto Chapter, were the first dietitians to launch HealthCastle cities. I had the opportunity to work alongside dietitians Gloria Tsang, who is incredibly vibrant and entrepreneurial, and Doug who is brilliant, and engaging.  I have learned so much from these dietitians and consider myself lucky to have worked in their (virtual) presence.

At the end of August, I will be leaving HealthCastle Calgary.  Thank you to all of you who faithfully read my blog posts, who took time to comment and who shared your personal reactions to my posts.  I look forward to what my future holds, knowing that food will be the thread that helps to tie me to my past and will provide the sustenance to fuel my future.

If you would like to connect with me, you can direct message me on Twitter.  My twitter handle is @kristynhall.  All the best in health and happiness.
